TIPS FOR AVOIDING COLLISIONS
Watch your speed
Collisions can often be avoided if you have more time to see animals, especially on rural roads.
Scan ahead
Scanning ahead helps you notice them early. Watch light of their eyes reflecting your headlights, using your high beams as often as possible. Not that not all eyes reflect well, like those of of moose.
Honk your horn
A couple short horn blasts helps to alert some animals you see to run out of the road instead of freezing in place. It’s less effective on turtles, snakes and birds.
Brake to slow down and don't swerve
If an animal is on the road, brake gently to slow down, but don't swerve or stop suddenly. Don’t endanger yourself or other drivers on the road.
Proceed carefully
If you see an animal on or near the road, slow up slightly to watch their actions - they can be unpredictable, or there may be others following. Animals often travel together and young animals follow their mothers.
Flick your lights
Warn oncoming cars of the potential hazard. Giving a warning signal may make them pay added attention to driving, even if they don’t know specifically an animal is present.
No Litter
Food and trash attracts animals onto the road. It may be biodegradable, but wildlife will be attracted to the food near the road.
